Why do reading levels from different leveling programs sometimes differ?
Leveling programs that use specially designed computer software, such as Accelerated Reader and Scholastic Reading Counts, read the text of an entire book and determine the reading level based on the number of words, their difficulty, and the complexity of sentence structure. Educators have reported dissatisfaction with these readability formulas especially in the case of non-fiction books. Non-fiction books tend to be graded higher by these formulas than educators themselves would normally grade them because of difficult or technical terminology. Such programs make no allowance for difficult words being explained within the text or in the glossary of the book. Crabtree bases its reading levels on teachers’ actual experience with students at different grade levels. Crabtree feels that Accelerated Reader's Interest Level category is a more accurate measure for non-fiction than its Reading Level category.
Add me to or remove me from Crabtree’s mailing list?
TO BE ADDED: Click here to add your name and address to Crabtree Publishing’s catalog mailing list.
TO BE REMOVED: Besides mailing to its own customer mailing list, Crabtree Publishing also rents mailing lists from reputable companies who compile educational mailing lists. If you wish to have your name removed from Crabtree Publishing mailings, please contact Crabtree’s Customer Service department by email, toll free telephone, or toll free fax number and provide the exact information which appears on your mailing label including name, title, or attention line, school or library name, and address, as well as any string of numbers or letters on the label which may be an identification code. Your name and address will be added to a “send no promotions” file which will be excluded from future mailings. NOTE: The success of this removal depends on being able to match your mailing label EXACTLY. Faxing a photocopy of the label is best to help ensure this. Please note that we can only remove you from Crabtree Publishing’s mailings. We cannot remove you from the mailing list from which your address was rented by Crabtree Publishing. If you wish your address to be removed from the original list, you must make that request directly to that mailing list company. Crabtree Publishing will be more than happy to provide you with the names of the companies from which your name was rented.
Does Crabtree Publishing accept manuscripts?
Crabtree does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. Crabtree Publishing has an editorial team in-house that creates curriculum-specific book series. Please refer to the section in FAQ’s that gives tips on how to get published.
I have written a children's book. How do I get it published?
Regretfully, Crabtree Publishing does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. If you have written a children’s book and would like to find a publisher, here are some helpful tips on getting started.
Find a book in the library called the Literary Market Place (LMP.) This directory lists publishers across North America and gives a brief summary of the kinds of books each company publishes and whether they accept manuscripts. Generally, you can either send book manuscripts directly to publishers for consideration or use a literary agent who will present your manuscript for you. Using an agent means that you must pay a fee for their service. It can, however, be an effective way to get your manuscript read because an agent already has established relationships with certain publishers who may not accept unsolicited manuscripts.
You can also contact the following organizations to get further information on how to get published, which publishers would be interested in receiving manuscripts, how to get a copyright, and the costs of getting published.
